BASKETBALL star Chris Lamb was rushed to hospital last night following an alleged assault during a game at Beau Sejour. Witnesses claim Richmond's former island player was head-butted by opponent Neal Bewey in the third quarter of a crucial Yorkshire Guernsey Division Two match against Manzur.

Bewey, Manzur's player-coach and a top referee, was ejected from the match for violent conduct.

Lamb continued to play for a further 10 minutes before collapsing on court at full time. An ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital.

Police were then alerted and Bewey was questioned at the station.

PC Chris Williamson, who interviewed witnesses at the Sir John Loveridge Hall, said last night: 'One person is helping us with our inquiries and one person is at the hospital.'

According to eyewitnesses who declined to be named, the alleged assault happened midway through the third quarter following a charging offence by Bewey on Lamb.

Bewey was immediately sent off while Lamb played on.

After the final buzzer, with the score 58-47 to Manzur, Lamb collapsed at about 8.45pm.

A delay, while Lamb was treated by paramedics, meant that the following Division One match between Collins Stewart II and Le Mont Saint was postponed.

The president of the Guernsey Basketball Association, Pat Ogier, who was at Beau Sejour last night, said the GBA committee would not comment until had looked further into the incident.

Meanwhile police today confirmed that an investigation had been launched into the incident and appealed for witnesses.

'A full investigation is taking place,' said a police spokesman. 'One man has been questioned but no charges have been made.

'We'd urge any witnesses to contact us as soon as possible.'
