THE hard-working and talented Donna Brehaut received the major award on offer at the inaugural Junior League presentation dinner. Close to 100 girls and parents attended the event at the Peninsula Hotel and saw the 17-year-old Grammar School student receive the PWC Achievement Award.

The Nerine B star is a junior league coach among other things connected with the sport.

'She's worked really, really hard,' said presentation evening co-organiser and island coach Gill Queripel.

'She's not only a junior coach, she's an under-19 island player, a senior squad player and a senior umpire - she's a fitting recipient. She goes right across the board at a good level.'

On the same day, Brehaut learned she had passed her assessment to take the B umpiring award. She will take the exam on Saturday 24 March in Southampton.

'I was really pleased and I was really shocked as well,' said Brehaut about her award.

'I didn't expect to get it and I passed my assessment as well.

'I'm a little bit nervous about that but it will be a good experience even if I don't pass.

'It's good to umpire games at a top level.'

The PWC academy player-of-the-year award was handed to 13-year-old Mae Skillen.

'Mae is brilliant and she's going to be real little star,' said Queripel.

'She's shown her true worth in training and has a maturity beyond her years and she has a great understanding of the game for someone so young. This is borne out by the fact that she has been fast-tracked into the Senior Super League.'

Along with Skillen, promising juniors Ollivia Ellis, Charlotte Hill, Abby Bingham and Tiffany Gervaise-Brazier have been fast-tracked into the Super League. The new competition kicks off later this year with the purpose of giving the best netballers regular competitive matches.

The G&A Electric Trophy for the league player of the season was given to Rhianne Flattery while the Joan Ozanne coach-of-the-year prize was presented to Kate Seabrook.

'The night went really well and it was much better than anticipated,' said Queripel.
