ANGELA SPILLMAN scooped top prize in the Yorkshire Guernsey Cancer Relief Trophy on the L'Ancresse links yesterday. Playing off a handicap of 33, Spillman scored 42 Stableford points, resulting in a reduction of her handicap to 29.

Her playing partner, Debbie Richards was overall runner-up with 39 points off a 16 handicap.

'Angela played very well and deserved to win,' said Richards.

'She scored 23 points without fault on the front nine and then a worthy 19 on the back nine, only missing out on scoring on one hole in the round.'

With a field of 72 women taking part this is one of the biggest competition entries of the year, apart from Lady Captain's Day and the Ladies Open.

Single handicapper Kay Mapley won the best gross score prize with a 78 off a handicap of nine.

In third place on countback was Jean Whalley with 39 points.
