Surreal day at Lord's
KRIS MOHERNDL has described his Lord's experience as 'brilliant'.
KRIS MOHERNDL has described his Lord's experience as 'brilliant'. The Cobo and Guernsey player was 12th man for a Europe XI who beat the MCC at the home of cricket on Thursday and got several tastes of the action.
'I fielded about six times and the ball followed me about when I got on,' said the 18-year-old.
'The first time I got on I was at third man, then I went out to deep point and had a couple of overs at mid-off.'
Moherndl added that the famous Lord's slope made it a unique fielding experience.
'You chase the ball and it just speeds up. It is just like running on a treadmill,' he said.
'It was surreal being there really. I was sat on the balcony looking around and everything was just huge.
'Although there weren't that many people there, there were a couple of schools down in the far corner and they were making a fair bit of noise.'
It turned out to be a low-scoring but exciting game, with the MCC making 183 for seven, with former England player John Stephenson, who has become a regular visitor to the island with the famous club, contributing 51.
'He hit it hard and he bowled well later on as well,' Moherndl said.
The European reply got off to an indifferent start and they were soon 33 for five, but Dane Freddie Klokker (47) and captain Trent Johnston (48), the skipper of Ireland's World Cup team, got them back on track.
Useful contributions from Kyle McCallan and Craig Wright, who hit the winnings runs, saw the Europe XI home with 3.4 overs and two wickets to spare.
Beforehand, Moherndl had managed to sit next to Johnston in the official team photo with the famous pavilion in the background.
'I squeezed in there and made sure I got that seat,' he chuckled.
'They were all a good bunch of lads.
'I was one of the first there on Wednesday and I went for a net with Freddie Klokker in the indoor centre, which is something else.
'It was brilliant to be there.'
Moherndl returns for Cobo against Rovers at Port Soif today while Mavericks play Elizabeth College.
