GH SMIT has been named Carey Olsen GCA Championship player of the month for May. Mavericks' big-hitting South African produced some typically brutal performances with the bat and proved he is no mug with the ball as well.

Smit began the campaign by bludgeoning 29 from just 15 balls in a five-wicket win against Optimists before outdoing himself with an unbeaten 69 from just 24 balls as Rovers were hammered by nine wickets.

In that match, he also did damage with his off spin, claiming four for 21.

Wanderers were next to feel his force as his 73 helped Mavs to a three-wicket win.

Meanwhile, the Division Two award went to Salemites stalwart Ralph Anthony, whose spin continues to be a handful for local batsmen.

The left-arm orthodox bowler ripped through the Elizabeth College second XI batting order, taking six for 17, and followed that with three for five against Sylvans.

Meanwhile, defending GCA Championship title holders Optimists had their chances of a second victory this season washed away at the KGV on Sunday.

Rovers, once again without several first-teamers, were bowled out for 128 with Mark Jefferies claiming three for 16 with his off spin. Teenager Robbie Le Corre top-scored with a patient 28.

However, persistent rain meant that the Optimists' reply was not even started.

After the weekend, Cobo remain on course to win their first domestic afternoon title since 1998 having secured maximum points from their win over Wanderers on Saturday.

Stuart Le Prevost's side are the only unbeaten team in the competition, all other outfits having lost at least two games.

Cobo face potentially dangerous opposition in Elizabeth College at the KGV on Saturday.
