ORGANISERS of the Pink Ladies Sunset Coastal Walk banked £60,000 for breast cancer patients yesterday. Anne McMillan and Doreen Le Poidevin counted £36,000-worth of cash and cheques in sponsorship money handed in at Saturday's event.

'With the £21,000 sent in with registration forms, the £36,000 we counted out on Sunday and the cheques

and cash we've had sent in today, the figure just keeps climbing,' said Mrs Le Poidevin.

More than 2,100 women walked the island's north coast to raise money for the treatment of lymphoedema, a side-effect of breast cancer treatment.

It took the women participating in the full 10.5-mile route, leaving Grandes Rocques at 6pm, about three hours to reach Market Square for a party.

'We cannot say thank you enough,' said Mrs Le Poidevin.

'The event would not have been as successful if we had not had the support of the marshals and volunteers, The Square Restaurant, Ged Kelly and everyone who turned up for the walk.

'Now we need people to send in their sponsorship money,' she said.

Breast cancer patient Pam Lacey has suffered from lymphoedema since 2004 as a result of her lumpectomy and radiotherapy treatment.

The 75-year-old, who manned the water station at Rousse Tower during the walk, said she had been overwhelmed by the amount raised.

'I think it's a wonderful effort,' she said.

'So many ladies took part, not because they have had cancer but because they wanted to help raise funds for the treatment of breast cancer patients.

'We will all be very grateful for their help.

'Each session for the treatment of lymphoedema costs £60, which I think is far too expensive, but it is essential for those who suffer from the condition,' she said.

'I have it done myself about every two months and it helps me a lot, so I'm very thankful to all those ladies who took part.'
