TEAM captain Di Hudson was beeming with pride after the Royal Guernsey Ladies' Section got the better of their La Moye counterparts.

It was the first time in four years that the Sarnians had captured the Scarborough Cup and they did it by an impressive three-point margin thanks to their domination of the afternoon singles matches.

'I was absolutely over the moon with the result,' said Hudson.

'In recent times, we won the cup in 1999 and 2003, so we do not get to see it too often.'

Things had started badly for the hosts at L'Ancresse when Gloria Paradiso and Elaine Pushman followed Jenny Deeley and Sheila Smith into the clubhouse with convincing wins apiece in the opening foursomes.

Marion Richards joined Hudson to put the RGGC's first half-point on the board before Julie Creed and Mandy Webber narrowed the gap to a point at lunch with a 3 and 1 win.

After the interval, though, the home players really found their form in the singles encounters.

Richards, Hudson and Joan Bichard were all convincing winners and Sue Wellfair, Di Aitchison and Webber also contributed a full point to the cause while the only two defeats both came on the 18th green.

It resulted in a 7.5-4.5 match victory for the RGGC in a competition played off scratch.

'Their handicaps were such that we should not have had a look in,' Hudson said.

'Our best was seven and they had a four and a couple of sixes, I believe.

'Home advantage must have counted for something.'

Also played was a B team match, introduced this year, which comprised six singles encounters.

It was a tight contest, edged by the visitors by a solitary point, 3.5-2.5, for them to take the Harte/Bichard Trophy back to La Moye.

'That was played off handicap and all our players were in receipt of just one or two shots,' Hudson said.

'Having played in the morning, they knew the conditions, so it helped. It was windy enough for the players to be troubled,' she added.
