Eggo crowned RGGC champ for 11th time
BOBBY EGGO has claimed his 11th Royal Guernsey Golf Club championship.
BOBBY EGGO has claimed his 11th Royal Guernsey Golf Club championship. He won this year's 36-hole competition at L'Ancresse by seven shots.
Open to members with a 12 handicap or lower, two awards were on offer - the Garenne Trophy for the best score off handicap and the coveted R. G. Falla Trophy for the club champion off scratch.
Eggo shot a first round of 71, which included a birdie at six and an uncharacteristic double bogey at the ninth to leave him one over at the turn.
On the back nine, his dropped shot at the 11th was countered by a three on the 16th. That birdie gave Eggo the lead for the first round, on countback, from Laurence Graham Junior.
The latter, an accomplished five handicapper, scored an impressive gross 71.
Eggo blew away the chasing pack in round two as he carded a superb 67.
His only blip was dropping a shot on the 11th.
A birdie on the sixth, followed by an extraordinary run of them on 14, 15 and 16, confirmed him as the champion yet again.
When asked what his victory was down to, an unassuming Eggo said: 'I just hit the ball well all day.'
Eggo's feat was put into context by the scores of the runners-up.
Graham came in second, third was the in-form Nigel Vaudin who shot two 74s, fourth Mick Marley, fifth Laurence Graham Snr and sixth John Le Lievre.
The Garenne Trophy was won by Graham Junior. He shot net scores of 66 and 69.
His impressive four-under morning round included three birdies on the front nine spoilt by a double bogey at two and a bogey at nine. He played the back nine to scratch.
In second place, Glen Marley, a chip off the old block, continued to add to the family trophy cabinet. The son of island stalwart Mick scored two net 68s.
Third was junior Sam Le Huray, fourth Peter Le Noury and fifth Graham Rabey.
*GARRY MCFARLANE leads both the net and scratch competitions going into the second and final round of the L'Ancresse Golf Club Championship tomorrow.
The two-handicapper, right, returned an excellent gross 68 to establish a two-shot lead in both standings. Danny Bisson's 70 was the next-best scratch score.
The defending champion, Steve Mahy, is still in the hunt having shot a gross 71, net 70.
