SAM LE HURAY (pictured) has blazed his way into the junior island team with a startling performance in the Guernsey Junior Golf Club championships. A year after big brother Tom won the main title, Le Huray, just 14, shot gross rounds of 77 and 74 to win a scratch and handicap trophy double.
'I didn't expect the trophy to go from one bedroom to the other,' said a surprised but delighted Colin Le Huray, the boys' father and president of the Junior Club.
The two rounds earned Sam another significant handicap reduction, this time from 10 to 7.5. He started the season at 17.
On an encouraging day for the club, Sam won the handicap section by two from Curtis Le Noury and the scratch on countback from an in-form Daniel O'Brien, who matched Sam's rounds of 77 and 74.
In the afternoon round, Sam started out with a double-bogey six despite a fine drive down the middle.
But the clincher for him was 25ft birdie putt at 17 and chipping in for two at the last.
O'Brien again started his round poorly, but did not spill another until dropping a shot at the 13th. He parred from there on in but still lost on countback to Sam's inward 34.
Both might have been beaten by Craig Shorto but for one disastrous hole.
He took nine at the par four fourth, but recovered to post a gross 73.
The championship finished, Le Huray senior named the Guernsey team to travel to play Jersey at La Moye later this month.
It is: Tom Le Huray (captain), Craig Shorto, Sam Le Huray, Elliot Corbin, Jamie Le Page, Will Davidson, Adam Tardivel, Daniel O'Brien, Danny Carre. Reserve: Andy Stuart.
