TOTAL Cobo were the only Sarnian side of four to win in the second set of group games in the NatWest Channel Islands Club Championship on a rain-hit Saturday. Both games in Jersey were completed, including Cobo's eight-wicket win over Sporting Club Francais, but in Guernsey the rain came to Mavericks' rescue with the local side needing a weather intervention to survive against Old Victorians.

Cobo, like Romerils at Port Soif, won on the Duckworth-Lewis method after heavy rain arrived at Grainville. It was their second straight win in the competition and they now look good for the semi-finals.

Sporting Club had scored 193 for eight from their 45 overs, Tony Carlyon hitting 53, Justin Le Fort 39 and Meeku Patidar 31.

Young Jonny Warr took three wickets for the Guernsey weekend champions while another youngster, Peter Le Hegarat, accounted for SCF star Matt Hague, caught at point by Blane Queripel for 22.

Chasing a par score, Cobo romped to 127 for two in 31.1 overs, Matt Oliver leading the way with 63 and Jamie Nussbaumer adding an undefeated 33.

At the end, Cobo were officially 12 runs ahead of the moving target as the heavens opened again.

A few miles away at the FB Fields, St Ouen thrashed Optimists by eight wickets and a similar fate seemed likely to befall Mavericks at the KGV after they slipped to 25 for five after just nine overs.

Overseas stars GH Smit and Justin Meades both fell for ducks to Tom Minty, but Mavericks were saved from humiliation by the sixth-wicket pair of Jaco Pieterse and opener Simon Huxtable.

They added 50 with Pieterse smashing two sixes in his 27 and Huxtable digging in for a useful 37.

Andy Burkhardt then weighed in with six and four boundaries in his run-a-ball 37 to propel Mavericks to 151.

With dark clouds moving in from the south west Old Victorians wasted little time in their reply and had raced to 51 when, just after 2pm, heavy rain forced the players off the pitch, not to return.

Under brighter skies at the same ground on Friday evening, Tim Ravenscroft blasted Corinthians to an important 40-run win over Chandlers in Division One of the Barclays Evening League.

The 15-year-old hit an undefeated 71 with 11 fours and with James Warr adding 31, Corinthians set Chandlers 120 to win in 16 overs.

Despite 21 from skipper Dave Clark, Chandlers never threatened to get near, Ravenscroft weighing in with two wickets.
