Who can stop RWB?
JERSEY'S RWB won the CI women's championship for a record sixth time at Foote's Lane, beating fellow islanders Quackers in the final.
JERSEY'S RWB won the CI women's championship for a record sixth time at Foote's Lane, beating fellow islanders Quackers in the final. The champions had come through a tough qualifying pool comprising the in-form Guernsey teams, AP Panthers and Ship and Crown Puffins and Quackers from Jersey.
RWB's first match was a 2-0 defeat against Quackers, who pressed them from the very start and didn't allow the holders to penetrate their defence.
Guernsey Panthers beat Puffins 1-0, so it was all to play for when RWB faced them in their next match.
Both teams started at a quick pace, but it was Sarah Heelis that put RWB in the lead with a ferocious shot from the side of the D. Panthers came back and brought the score to 1-1.
Chrissie Hefford went on one of her mazy runs and put the ball past experienced keeper Colette Brown making the final score 2-1 and putting RWB second from top, with Quackers group winners, after a second win against Guernsey Puffins.
In the other group, Jersey's Nomads and Jersey Ladies faced Brewin Dolphins and Clubhouse Cubs.
Nomads' first game was against Jersey Ladies who went into this tournament as underdogs, but were the surprise team of the day. Nomads started confidently and went ahead with a Liz Wigley goal, but Jersey Ladies bounced straight back with a superb goal from the top of the D from newcomer Liz Murfin. Final score 1-1 and all to play for.
Nomads' next game was a 1-0 win over Cubs and they then came up against Guernsey Dolphins, who with Becky Hubbard, Michelle Gilson and Rachel Sharp shining edged it 1-0.
Jersey Ladies enterprising passing and attacking hockey secured them the second semi-final spot after a 4-0 thrashing of Cubs.
So the stage was set with three teams from Jersey and one team from Guernsey in the semi-finals.
Quackers beat Jersey Ladies 1-0 while the home island's remaining hopes took on RWB.
With quick goals from Sarah Heelis and Chrissie Hefford, Dolphins were soon 2-0 down and there was no way back.
In the final on-form striker Heelis struck in the very first few minutes to put the title holders in the lead.
Fiona McKinnon made it 2-0 but Quackers got one back through Becky Slater who cleverly volleyed home after a rebound from a Jamey Herbert penalty corner strike.
After a tense last few minutes, which saw Shelagh Herbert hit the post for Quackers, RWB held onto win again.
