A GUEST worker will return to the island on Monday to find that her car has been wrecked by joyriders. The red Saab 900 was taken from Castel Farm Eggs' Vassalerie Road compound, along with 30 dozen eggs and an LDV Convoy white van.

The van was returned with minor damage but the car's front and rear were extensively damaged, a tyre burst and the rear bumper ripped off.

'It looks as if it has been driven over fields or rough terrain - it has a lot of mud on and it's a write-off,' said CFE owner Martin Freeman.

'The Latvian girl is coming back next Monday and it's going to be quite a shock.'

The compound's entrance gate was damaged and police believe both vehicles were taken between 2pm on Monday and 6am yesterday.

'This was purely vandalism,' said Mr Freeman. 'I think whoever broke in there burst open the lock on the gate. It had a padlock and steel bolt which went into the ground. It had been torn right apart.'

'It's such a mindless occupation - it's very sad. One always suspects it's youngsters a bit bored during half-term,' he said.

'It's a pity people have not got better things to do.'

It is not the first time recently that eggs have been used in attacks nor premises targeted.

'We have occasionally had minor problems in the past and we had a break-in many years ago,' said Mr Freeman.

A month previously to the day - on Saturday 12 January - a CCTV camera was stolen from the Guernsey Dairy and police have released images of those believed to have been involved.

Mr Freeman was reviewing security yesterday and said the business would consider installing CCTV.

'We have repaired the gates already to make it as secure as we can.'

Police are appealing for information - including from anyone who saw the Saab, registration 38189, and van, registration 59052, on the roads and anybody who had eggs thrown at or left on or near their premises.

A box of small catering eggs - about £30-worth - was also stolen and a police spokesman said last evening that they were investigating to see whether there was a connection with the egg attacks in St Saviour's.
