AURIGNY was hailed as the people's airline at its 40th anniversary celebrations yesterday.

The States-owned airline is one of the longest serving in the world and was praised by dignitaries and politicians for maintaining a vital link between the islands and the UK.

'It's benefited from States subsidies, which have been of enormous value to them and to the islands as a whole – it means the taxpayer is almost like a shareholder,' said States of Alderney President Sir Norman Browse.
