DAN ARBLASTER averaged 30.176mph along a stretch of the A3 in Hampshire yesterday morning to become national junior 10-mile champion.

And to cap a remarkable day for Guernsey cycling, his nearest challenger in the 45-strong field was fellow GVC member and Elizabeth College student, James McLaughlin. Arblaster shocked himself with the ride of his young life on the section of dual carriageway near Petersfield.

'I just wanted to get a PB and in the top 10, but I felt pretty good this week,' said the 17-year-old, who had started ninth from the back in a start list determined by submitted best times. He said 'he didn't have the foggiest' what target to aim for as he set out, but gave it all. With about half a mile to go I'd pretty much run out of steam. Not quite, but nearly. It felt quick.'

His finish time of 19min. 53sec. gave him victory by 10sec. from his friend and rival, McLaughlin, who also set a new best.
