HEATHER WATSON will play at Junior Wimbledon next week.

The Lawn Tennis Association gave the Sarnian star, who celebrated her 16th birthday last month, a wild-card entry into the main draw following her great results this year and after she made the quarter-finals of the Roehampton ITF Junior Circuit event this week.

'I'm really happy,' said Miss Watson. 'It's been a dream of mine to play at Wimbledon. I'm going in there and will take it match by match and hopefully win. I'm going to be training hard this week so that I'm well prepared. I'm representing the Channel Islands.'

It is understood that she is the first Channel Islander to have made the main draw for the competition. Channel Islands LTA development officer Hugh Raymond was delighted.

'This is great news for CI tennis and all those coaches in Jersey and Guernsey who have aspirational players and can now believe that you do not have to come from the larger counties in the UK to get to Wimbledon,' he said.
