THE Guernsey Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society's Open Festival got off to a varied and eventful start.

The early shore results were a little disappointing, although the number of entries on the Friday exceeded the 11 that had been recorded in the whole of last year's event.

In addition, the average weight of the fish did not come up to expectations. In fact, in the first six weigh-ins up to Sunday night, only three topped the 6-0-0 mark.

Sadly, the event started on a controversial note.

An angler was disqualified at the first weigh-in as the organising committee considered that the young angler had contravened the society's policy as regards the use of trots prior to the event.
