SWIMMING coach Alison Frankland has – like Hollywood star Keira Knightley – been nominated for a national award for inspirational women.

Mrs Frankland (pictured), who coaches the Barracudas Swimming Club and was this year awarded an MBE for her work, has been nominated in the aspirational non-celebrity category of the Inspiration Awards for Women.

The awards have eight categories, but only two are for non-celebs. The grandmother was shocked to hear of her nomination.

'I first heard about this award when I received a telephone call from Skylet Andrew Ltd, founder member of the Inspiration Awards for Women, to say that I had been nominated,' she said. 'I was not sure what to make of it at first and they advised me to log on to their website, which I did, and there to my surprise was my name and citation along with five other nominees.'

Mrs Frankland's category is for an individual who has shown determination and desire to achieve success and has inspired others to do so.
