A BLANCHELANDE schoolgirl has won a late call-up to represent Guernsey on the international stage next month.

Swimmer Vicki Parfit (pictured) will be travelling to Pune in India as a replacement the island's Commonwealth Youth Games team following the withdrawal, through injury, of athlete Michael Batiste.

The 15-year old's inclusion takes the total number of swimmers in the squad up to five, half of the 10-strong travelling team. Barracudas coach Alison Frankland was delighted with the youngster's change in fortune.

'I'm obviously really disappointed for Michael because it isn't really the way you want to earn a place. Nevertheless, it is a great opportunity for her and a really good experience. She was bitterly disappointed when she missed out originally, so I am delighted for her.'

Parfit will be competing in four events, three of them in her favourite discipline, breaststroke. She will race over 50m, 100m and 200m in that stroke, as well as the 200m individual medley.
