THE Guernsey development squad played some good cricket yesterday despite suffering a four-wicket defeat to the UAE in their opening match of the Academy Arch Trophy in Sharjah.

'On the whole they were older than us and experience of playing in those conditions was key,' said Guernsey coach Jeremy Frith.

Playing in the stadium that has hosted more one-day internationals (199) than any other in the world, Guernsey won the toss and made 210 for seven from their 50 overs.

Will Thompson (46) and captain Jamie Nussbaumer (23) shared in a second-wicket stand of 79 while Ben Ferbrache top-scored with an unbeaten 69, sharing in vital partnerships with Adam Hindle, Luke Nussbaumer and Will Peatfield.

The Nussbaumer brothers picked up three wickets between them in the UAE reply and the hosts were wobbling on 184 for six at one stage.
