ALICE LOVERIDGE (pictured) reaped the benefit of two lucky edges in the deciding final set to make history at the Hougue du Pommier Stadium last night.

The 14-year-old became not only the youngest winner in the 42-year history of the Capelles Open singles tournament, but also the first female winner.

It was appropriate that Dave Falla, the Capelles MYC club leader who started the tournament in 1967 as a way of celebrating the club's 21st birthday, was present to see Loveridge draw on all her competitive instincts for survival to pip the title-holder 13-11 in the decider.

Garry Dodd had looked good for his third Capelles title in four years when he swept into a 5-1 advantage at ends in the decider.
