CHRIS GRIFFITHS has emphasised how a 'brilliant team effort' regained Guernsey the spoils in the inter-island select rugby match.

The hosts won 14-10 at Foote's Lane on Sunday to end a drought of several years in the annual encounter.

'I'm very proud of them - it's about time,' said Griffiths, who coached the Guernsey side with Doug Hayter.

'To be honest, we did well in the first half to soak up their pressure and we had about 25% of the possession. The boys were brilliant in defence.

'I said before the game that it was going to be our day and at half-time I said we had 40 minutes left to make it our day. We did exactly that.

'Guernsey wanted it more and believed we could do it.'
