JEREMY FRITH (pictured), the island's best cricketer, has left Cobo to head up an academy side to play in the new NatWest Channel Islands Cricket League.

The junior team will join the island's four major weekend clubs to battle it out with six teams from Jersey when the inaugural competition gets under way this summer.

'This is an extremely important development for Guernsey cricket,' said Guernsey Cricket Board chairman Dave Piesing.

'To be able to put together a side of young talent in the CI League, bolstered by senior players to ensure that they are as competitive as possible, will prove invaluable.

'Jersey have been very supportive of this development and there is no doubt that it will add extra interest to what is already looking like a fascinating first season for the CI League.'

The PriceWaterhouse-Coopers sponsored side will primarily be made up of under-18 players, who did not feature regularly for clubs in 2008.
