ROBERT BATISTE thought he had killed his father, Peter, in a violent attack.

The incident happened outside the Picquet House, St Peter Port, on 8 August.

Yesterday, Batiste, 25, was sent to prison for 22 months by the Royal Court after pleading guilty to assaulting his father and Advocate Gordon Dawes, who intervened.

In a police interview Batiste said: 'I thought: "I've killed my dad. I've given him a good kicking".

'I was scared. I'm not being ashamed of it. He did get a kicking and at the end of the day I do regret it. What son does beat up his father?'

Judge Russell Finch said that Batiste needed to address his problems as he posed a serious risk to other people.

'Both of these charges are serious,' he said. 'Our first priority is to protect the general public.'

He sentenced Batiste to 18 months in prison for the assault on his father and four months for the one on Advocate Dawes. It will be served from the date of his arrest.
