GUERNSEY earned a home tie with Worthing in the quarter-finals of the HA Trophy with their gritty 3-1 victory at Sonning at the weekend.

'I'm happy with the result – it was one of those where we ground it out,' said Guernsey player-coach Ben Allberry.

'We didn't play our best hockey but we managed to come through it, which is really good.'

Sonning came extremely close to taking the lead after 15 minutes but they were denied by a fantastic double save by Guernsey keeper Nick Robilliard.

That spurred on the Greens who took the lead on 22min. through Yobbos winger Adam Kitching with a tap-in.

But the visitors' lead was short-lived as their Reading-based opponents hit back two minutes later at a penalty corner.

The status quo remained for most of the match.

However, with around six minutes to go and extra time beckoning, Andy Whalley fed Allberry with a superb through ball and the former Havant man did the rest in a one-on-one situation with the Sonning goalkeeper.
