SLEEPY defending at set pieces and crosses cost Mark Ingrouille's Guernsey side dear in Saturday lunchtime's Star Trophy at the Corbet Field.

But even if the green-and-whites had kept out all three, it is hard to imagine Jersey not going home with the old trophy, which they have now won 10 times in the last 13 years, losing just once in that period.

The red-and-whites looked the more talented and composed side throughout and gifted Guernsey their goal early in the second period with the visitors three up and threatening a rout.

The home coach said he was 'very disappointed' with his side but had no complaints about their effort.

'It just wasn't their day today,' he said before bemoaning his side's luck with the set pieces which, in effect, clinched the game for Jersey.

'The two throw-ins from which they scored I thought were both foul throws,' said the fourth former Guernsey schoolboy Muratti player to coach the 'Star' side.

Russel Le Feuvre, his opposite number, was naturally happy enough with the result, but considered his team could have played better.

'The occasion affected the players,' he said.
