MISHAPS and misfortune were the themes of the opening day in the 2009 MeesPierson Island Championships.

Although there was some splendid golf played around L'Ancresse, one of the most eagerly anticipated match-ups was cut short prematurely just when the tie looked set to be a cracker.

Dave Jeffery had come off the 11th having won it to go all square with 2007 champion Jack Mitchell.

Both were just off the right-hand side of the 12th green with their tee shots and then hit a couple of delightful chips, but Jeffery missed his par putt while Mitchell calmly sank his.

They were not to reach the 13th tee, though.

As Jeffery (pictured) walked through the grass bunker from the green towards the path, he trod in a hidden rabbit hole and turned his ankle.

Within seconds it had swelled up bigger than the Titleist ProV1x he uses and he was forced to retire, much to the disappointment of his understanding opponent.

Jeffery reported last night that the ankle was not broken but he had damaged ligaments.
