DESPITE being the youngest man in the field James McLaughlin produced the best performance by a local rider at the national 25 in Norfolk.
The 18-year-old (pictured) was one of four local riders who travelled to the blue riband 25-mile time trial with mixed results.
Last of the Sarnians to compete McLaughlin, riding for the Velo Club's LCF Rothschild Youth Development team, was making his debut at this level.
But it didn't faze the youngster and he wasted no time in catching his minute man just six miles into the course.
Time checks on the faster seniors showed the former junior medal winner was more than holding his own and was ahead of many of the seeded riders.
Crossing the line in 53 minutes and 4 seconds, McLaughlin finished in a superb 15th place overall from 106 finishers.
This was highest finish by a senior in the history of the Guernsey Velo Club.
