BANNED swimsuits could be used in the Island Games.

The sport was revolutionised last year by the introduction of space-age body suits that have led to world records falling like dominoes.

Fina, the sport's governing body, has since released a list of approved suits and they will be checking swimmers' suits at the World Championships in Rome next month to see if they comply.

However, the organiser of the swimming competition in the Island Games at the end of this month, Kjell Hansen, had this to say when asked if there were to be any restrictions on swimsuits in Aland:

'We don't bother with that. It is the friendly games.'

But all sports at the Island Games have to abide by the rules of their governing body so swimming has to come under Fina.

Therefore, in theory, if Fina ban a swimsuit, the IIGA should enforce that ban. A response from Hansen with regards to this point was still being waited on at the time of going to press.

However, the head coach of the Guernsey swimming team, Alison Frankland (pictured), is concerned about the issue and has contacted the Island Games technical committee.

'They have to run under Fina,' she said. 'I'm sure that the situation will be addressed when we get to Aland. It's an issue that's being resolved.'
