HEATHER WATSON had two reasons to celebrate yesterday.

Not only did she ease through the final qualifying round of the AEGON Pro-Series tournament in Felixstowe, the Guernsey star learned that she is now the highest ranked British junior in the world.

In the latest ITF rankings, Watson is up two places to 12th, while 2008 Wimbledon junior girls champion Laura Robson has slipped to 25 under the quirks of the ranking system.

Hannah James is the next best place Brit at number 40 and Stephanie Cornish is at number 49.

For the meantime Watson's focus is away from the junior scene and on the Futures grasscourt circuit.

In the second qualifying round at Felixstowe she beat fellow Brit Laura Slater 6-3, 6-2 to make the main draw.

Having won the first set comfortably Watson was 5-2 and 30-15 up in the second when the heavens opened.

But when they returned to the court play lasted no time at all as the Sarnian won the first two points for the game, set and match.
