IT WAS James Sherbourne to the rescue last night as Rovers maintained their 100% Evening League record.

Coming in at number seven, Sherbourne struck a remarkable 42 off just 21 balls to see Rovers defeat their weekend league stablemates Optimists at the KGV.

Top-of-the-table Rovers were dead and buried before he came to the crease.

'Sherbs will take the game away from you,' said his delighted captain Stuart Bisson afterwards.

'He can do that to any bowling attack. He is such a lethal striker of the ball.'

Optimists had set an imposing total of 168 from their 20 overs thanks to a very good 69 from captain Mark Jefferies and Andy Biggins chipping in with 39.

Rovers had the worst start imaginable when their best player and former Hampshire professional Lee Savident went first ball, caught behind by the young Zak Damerall off Jake Le Marchant.

Savident had actually received the Barclays Wealth Player of the Month award for June before the game from Sherbourne, who is an associate director at the financial company.
