MATT LE BER and Lucy Beere were walking on 'Ayr' last night, after they had guaranteed themselves places in the quarter-finals of the World Bowls Champion of Champions tournament in the Ayrshire coastal resort.

Le Ber (pictured) finished his group programme in style, with just one defeat in 12 matches - a record no-one else could match - while his girlfriend, Beere, who has lost only two matches in nine, was sitting pretty in equal second place in the group table.

Le Ber completed his round robin campaign with two byes and will return to the Northfield greens this evening hoping to earn a place in tomorrow's semi- finals.

On Saturday, he struggled to beat Scots-born Isle of Man champion Steve McIntyre, but got home, 7-7, 8-6, then beat Californian Michael Siddall in straight sets, 6-5, 14-2.

His next victim was Botswana's Oabona Motladiile, although the African took a rare set off Le Ber, who won 14-4, 8-9, 4-0 before the Sarnian returned to his winning ways with an 8-3, 8-4 straight sets win over Canadian Hirendra Bhartu.

Whatever happens today, Le Ber will remain top of his section. Beere chalked up a fine win over Malaysia's Ku Hazirah then beat Theuna Grobler, from Namibia and Japan's Yoko Goda.

The only other countries to see both their representatives already safely through to the last eight are Scotland and Australia.
