DRIVERS have been ignoring new traffic restrictions put in place in Longue Hougue Lane, St Sampson's.

A nine-month trial of banning vehicles unless they were going to businesses or homes in the lane began on Monday because of safety concerns.

Ferryspeed depot manager Chris Dodd said that cars were still driving through the road on Monday and Tuesday.

'We don't know if it will work yet, but something had to happen,' he said.

'The situation has been bad for the past 10 to 15 years.

'It's worse when the kids are at school when they race down here as a shortcut.'

He said it had got to the stage where there was going to be a serious accident.

'We did have an incident once where an elderly woman came out of the motor tax office, up the road and went straight into one of our trucks.

'In my opinion they should shut off the top of the road and then people would get to know they can't go through there.'

Retired messenger Ray Gilbert, who lives at the top of the lane, said the new strategy would not be an answer to the problem.

'I don't think it will make a difference,' he said.
