WOULD you like to own a piece of Guernsey's coastline?

You are not alone. More than 100 islanders flocked to an open day for the sale of a Second World War bunker at Rocquaine on Friday - and they all had a different idea of what they would use it for.

'There were people waiting to get in and have a look at 9am and we have had a steady stream since then,' said Martel Maides' commercial director Nick Renny.

They are selling the fortification and adjoining land, which has title deeds back to 1903, with an inviting guide price of £40,000.

He said while there had been quite a few 'curiosity seekers', most had a serious interest in buying the unusual property.

'The Occupation Society have been taking an interest and we have had people looking to use it for storage. Other people have lived in this area all their lives and have always wanted to use it. It really has been a broad cross-section,' said Mr Renny. The fortification has three chambers, a machine gun room, main gunroom and lower level ammunition room. It is connected to mains electricity and water.

'There are always people out there who want to own something unusual and a little strange,' said Mr Renny.

Artist and entrepreneur Mark Duncan was one of those looking around the property. 'I've always wanted to own a piece of Guernsey's heritage and history - especially a German bunker,' he said.
