WAVE TELECOM has purchased Newtel Guernsey.

The acquisition, which includes Newtel Data Services Ltd and GuernseyNet Ltd, is subject to regulatory approval, but Wave says the move will strengthen its range of services.

It also means Wave has added approximately 3,500 residential broadband customers to its books because Newtel, like Wave, offers broadband wholesale from Cable & Wireless.

Wave managing director Tim Ringsdore (pictured) said the coming together of the two firms would provide opportunities to offer a greater range of services.

'In recent months our companies have been working together to support local and international business and I see this acquisition as a natural step that will help us to develop new business into the Bailiwick of Guernsey and better support local customers.'

He said the next phase of investment for Wave would be a multi-million-pound expansion of its hosting facility.

Nine members of Newtel staff are involved in the acquisition and for now it is a case of business as usual, according to Mr Ringsdore.

'A full evaluation of the roles and structure following the acquisition will take place over the next six months.'

Gary Whipp, chief executive officer of Newtel, thanked customers for their support over the years.

'We are confident that Wave will continue to provide an excellent service.

'We will be working hard over the next six months to ensure a smooth integration.'
