THE island's number one tennis player, Dom McLuskey, is off on Monday to join the University of Hawaii.

The 20-year-old Sarnian has been awarded a tennis scholarship at the American college.

He will also study French. 'I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be awesome,' said McLuskey (pictured).

The powerful right-hander led Guernsey to the gold medal in the team event at the Island Games in Aland earlier this summer

He also picked up the gold in the doubles with Pat Ogier.

He had spent the last two years at Tyler Junior College in Texas.

In 2007 he was named the USA Junior College rookie of the year.

McLuskey admitted that he had no plans to return to the States.

'I didn't think I was going back,' he said.

'I thought I was done after Texas, but my old coach at Tyler contacted me to say that there were some schools interested in me. I got in contact with a few of them and Hawaii had the quickest response and they were really enthusiastic.'
