ENGLAND rugby player Simon Shaw was given a tour of Randall's Brewery yesterday.

The 6ft 8in. 19-stone player was in Guernsey to support the Wasps Legends in a charity match against a Select XV.

Due to injury he was unable to take part in the charity golf tournament held yesterday afternoon so Randall's managing director Ian Rogers instead offered him a tour of the brewery.

'We are all big rugby fans,' said Mr Rogers. 'We thought it was a great opportunity as we sponsor St Jacques Rugby team and they were bringing him over.

'I knew that he couldn't play the golf and that he would be looking for something to do - and I know that he likes a drink.'

Mr Rogers said the brewery was delighted that a player of Shaw's calibre would enjoy a pint of Breda. He was one of the best players in the recent Lions tour of South Africa.

The island rugby match was in aid of the Wooden Spoon charity, which raises money for underprivileged and disabled children in the local community.

Mr Shaw said Wooden Spoon was one of several charities he was involved with.

'I like to get to know the charities,' he said. 'The Wooden Spoon was one that started in rugby and a lot of guys give their time.'

As a professional player, he said, he was unable to play in the match but would be cheering on the Wasps Legends, who include Kenny Logan and Roger Uttley.
