THOUSANDS flocked to Guernsey's latest fashion store yesterday.

UK chain-store outlet Peacocks opened in the Alliance supermarket on the Braye Road Industrial Estate promising cheap clothing and 16 new jobs for islanders.

The company said it was the busiest day one in a Peacocks concession store ever, with £7,500 being taken in the first three hours.

Retail operations director Chris Miles said the firm was very pleased to be in partnership with Alliance.

'We looked at a few places in Guernsey, one being the Woolworths building, yet rent is so high here,' he said.

'Alliance is a value for money store and so are we, so it made perfect sense for us to come here.'

Mr Miles said the company was not worried about the out-of-town location.

'Guernsey does not have any other value fashion outlets,' he said.

'And I think the people of the island will appreciate us and will come down. And enough people shop in Alliance anyway.'
