A NOTRE DAME schoolboy has won a national competition to be the England team mascot for the first Test match of the inaugural Gillette Four Nations Rugby League Tournament against France on Friday.

Nine-year-old Jacob Carr (pictured), beat thousands of children from around the country in a competition on the England Rugby League Association's website.

He now has the honour of leading out the English team on Friday night at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium.

The match is being televised live on Sky Sports Two.

His father, John Carr, said he was ecstatic when they found out at the end of last week that he had won, but he then went strangely silent.

'He went a bit quiet after a while,' said Carr senior who is a lecturer at the College of Further Education. 'He said he doesn't know the national anthem.'

The Four Nations Series sees England battle it out with France, Australia and world champions New Zealand.

Jacob is also a dab hand at rugby.

For the last three years he has been part of the Guernsey Rugby Academy and has two Siam age group caps to his name.
