When Beere spoils your otherwise perfect weekend

MATT LE BER was just one trophy away from a perfect weekend – only for his girlfriend to deny him a full house at the Bowls Guernsey finals.

Lucy Beere has already featured prominently in the 'international achievements' category of our countdown, but her 21-13 Press Open Singles victory over a man who was otherwise in all-conquering form on the Corbet Field green back in August is worthy of a mention in itself.

The BGA have made a push to have the Press Open seen as the most prestigious singles event of the island championships and it certainly had the two most consistent players of the outdoor season contest its final.

However, it does not hold British Isles qualifier status and, in that respect, Le Ber's achievements of that weekend in winning all his other finals in a packed schedule was extraordinary.

He walked away from the weekend with two singles crowns on top of a Travers Pairs success and the Sandeman Fours.
