Langlois beats best but misses top spot

DESPITE not claiming the top spots, Guernsey had a successful time in the Deutsche Bank Channel Islands Senior and Junior Top 12 Competitions.

Held at the Geoff Reed Table Tennis Centre, St Clements, at the weekend, the event features the top six senior and junior table tennis players from both islands.

Jersey's table tennis development officer, Craig Gascoyne, won the senior tournament while one of his young charges, Max Tupper, took the honours in the junior version.

However, Guernsey players took the other top five spots in the seniors and they held their own in the juniors.

'Although we lost both, we're pretty pleased,' said Guernsey Table Tennis president Derek Webb. 'We were very pleased with the performances and attitude of all of our players. We're only slightly disappointed that we've come away without the top awards. But, all in all, it was a good day.'

The Greens' stand-out performer on the day was Olly Langlois.

The 16-year-old (pictured) won all of his senior matches in Jersey, including a stunning 3-2 defeat over Gascoyne, which was the Welshman's only loss in the competition.
