IN A tense and exciting contest that was never going to be anything but close, Rob Crame secured victory over Gary Sarahs to secure Hampshire Sevens victory for La Grande Mare Golf Club at St Pierre Park.

On an overcast and damp morning, the preliminary round contest started with Nicky Donaldson against Martin De Carteret.

Both players seemed a bit nervous but Donaldson started the better and although De Carteret managed to start a fight back, the LGM man claimed holes 16 and 17 to secure a 3 and 1 victory to put his side on their way.

The second match out was very competitive with some good golf played between Chris Walker and Paul Bourgaize.

Walker took the early initiative, before Bourgaize fought back to take the match the full distance.

However, it was the visitor who triumphed on the 18th to give LGM their second point.
