Local environmental group G-Can celebrated with an event but many islanders did their bit at home.

John Buchanan, along with wife Lucy and children Elanor, 13, and Marcus, 10, have taken part in the event since its inception. By 8.30pm the final cup of tea had been brewed and 35 candles were lit in the family's living room.

They spent the hour playing a board game and reading a book together.

Mr Buchanan said it was an important event.

'The idea is that we are sending a message to politicians,' he said. 'We want more-responsible use of energy. There are more people taking part in this event as people become more conscious.'
