ONE of the top men in developing grassroots football in England has thrown his weight behind 'Guernsey FC'.

It recently came to light that the island could have a side play in the UK leagues.

A sponsor is in place and the Guernsey Football Association is supporting the enterprise.

Former Vale Rec and Junior Muratti player Steve Sharman, 41, pictured, is employed by the English FA as a football consultant to grassroots football in the south of England and is manager of the England Universities football team.

He also found time to assist island boss Tony Vance as Guernsey sensationally defeated the Dorset Premier League on Saturday to reach the final of the FA Carlsberg National League System Cup.

Sharman believes having an island side play regular football in the UK is a great idea – as long as it has the support of the entire local football community.
