THAT now infamous cloud of volcanic ash, has been both good and bad news for bowls' husband-and-wife Ian and Ali Merrien.
The pressure comes with the knowledge that they, alone, are representing the northern hemisphere down under in the World Cup at the Warilla club in New South Wales.
'Never in the history of lawn bowls has so much depended on two Guernsey players,' said World Bowls Limited (WBL) chief executive Gary Smith, who is grateful for their presence in Australia.
When planes were grounded in Europe, Ian and Ali, ranked 12 and two respectively in the men's and women's WBL world rankings, were already at the venue, because they have been playing for the Warilla club since last month's Australian Open.
