GUERNSEY'S challenge in the World Indoor Bowls Council championships at Auchinleck in Ayrshire petered out when Gary Pitschou and Steve Desperques (pictured) failed to make the cut to the knockout stage.

With defending champion Ali Merrien away in Australia, Guernsey's officials, aware of their commitments to the Commonwealth Games, decided not to send a female representative.

In the men's singles, the normally reliable Pitschou failed to win a set against Scotland's Mike Stepney, Ireland's Mark McPeak and Welsh hope Mike Dick, while the same fate befell Desperques against Jersey's Jamie Macdonald and top Scots David Gourlay and Andy Furye.
