The number of locals is the only new record

FOR the first time in nearly 20 years, no new records were set at this year's Guernsey Masters Meet.

In an event still including 87 swimmers despite the cloud of volcanic ash that brought Europe to a virtual standstill over that weekend, Terry Wright and Karen Wyllie were crowned male and female top swimmers respectively.

Originally more than 150 swimmers were due to take part, many of them from around the UK and Europe, some with fine international pedigrees, which may explain the lack of record-breakers, for the first time since the first event back in 1992.

However, with many of the competitors remarking that it is the camaraderie and spirit they come back for each year rather than just the competition, it did not make much difference to the overall success of the weekend.
