FORMER Castel deputy Eric Walters (pictured) died on Sunday night aged 79.
The hugely popular ex-States member had been ill for several years.
Tributes poured in yesterday from former colleagues in the House.
Former Bailiff Sir de Vic Carey said Mr Walters would be remembered as a highly respected member of the States and someone who received tremendous support from the electorate.
'So often he was the first to nose out something that had gone wrong in the community and it was to his credit that he recognised on occasion the better course was to defer for the time being, highlighting what he had found to the media,' Sir de Vic said.
'At the end of the day he wanted what was best for Guernsey and those he was trying to help and not his own glory – a genuine character who enriched the island's political life.'
