WHEN Dave Lucas, Len Le Ber and Gary Pitschou won the British men's triples title in Belfast last summer, lead Lucas announced his retirement from international bowls and Le Ber and Pitschou looked for a new partner.

Mick Hullock slotted in nicely, and the new-look trio duly qualified for a crack at retaining the title in Worthing – but the wheels came off their challenge last night and they lost 23-9 to Jersey in the quarter-finals.

Things went wrong from the start, as Terry and Richard Allen and Brian Bisson opened for Jersey with three singles and collected a count of four on the fourth end to lead, 7-0.

A single on the fifth end made it 8-0 before the Sarnian trio got going, and for a while it looked as if they might make a game of it.

Guernsey scored a confidence-boosting treble on the sixth end and added a single on the seventh and a double on the ninth – but still trailed 6-11 after nine ends.
