AN ALDERNEY politician wants a guarantee Blue Islands will continue to operate flights from the island to Southampton before supporting any deal to sell Aurigny.

As one of Alderney's representatives in the States of Guernsey, Richard Willmott would be able to vote on proposals to sell the airline if they were presented to the Assembly. Treasury and Resources has agreed in principle to sell the loss-making airline to Blue Islands and the deal has now entered a two-month period of due diligence.

At present, Aurigny provides Alderney's only direct flights to the UK through the Southampton link, which Mr Willmott (pictured) said was vital to the island's economy.

'Until such time that the guarantees in place for the Southampton to Alderney route are rock solid, I won't support it.'
