Culture and Leisure minister Mike O'Hara said the water chutes had an estimated lifespan of 10 years and the centre's had been there for 20.

'Maintenance is increasing year-by-year,' he said. 'In the last five to seven years, there has also been a noticeable fall in the number of users.'

Between £25,000 and £30,000 was needed to fund essential work and a similar amount had to be spent annually on maintenance, he added.
